Photos: Melting Snow Uncovers Abandoned Car In Mt. Sinai

Police say to call Brookhaven Town about abandoned vehicles.

Cars abandoned in the middle of the blizzard over the weekend when drivers sought safety or just couldn’t go on anymore through the increasing snow have been a problem for plows cleaning roadways over the past few days. Others are just turning up in unusual places. The vehicle in this photo taken on Tuesday seemed to have dropped out of the sky into a median on Route 83 in Mt. Sinai.

One theory is that the car was parked on a snow bank that slowly melted away leaving the car in this ditch. Another offered by a reader on Facebook said that perhaps it was pushed there by a snowplow or payloader clearing the roads.

Whatever happened, we hope the people who left the car are alright. (There was no one in the car at the time this picture was taken.)

Suffolk Police said that residents should call Brookhaven Town when they find an abandoned car on the roadway.

“The car owner is probably taking care of removal,” said a police spokesperson by email. “There are still a few of these around the county from Friday and Saturday.”

Have you seen any abandoned cars around after the blizzard? Have you reported any?

Can you imagine being the first person to approach that car after it was uncovered by the snow?....Thank God there was no one in there, hope the driver & all are ok...

I guess the snow was just high enough for someone to go over the guardrail and not even know.
