Cops are on the hunt for four individuals who assaulted and attempted to rob a man who was walking at Medford Avenue and Oak Street in Patchogue early Monday morning.

According to the Suffolk County Police, the group approached the victim at 3:55 a.m.asking if he had money. When he said that he didn't, the group assaulted him. Police did not say how badly the victim was injured.

Police were notified and one officer chased after one attackers, but was unable to catch him. A helicopter was involved during the search, police said.

The investigation is ongoing, police said.

That helicopter was on the scene at 4:00 a.m. If the incident occurred at 3:55 that's a mighty fast response.

Is this part of the Downtown Patchogue revitalization?
Michael Sorrentino (Editor) August 26, 2013 at 12:16 PM
@Peter: We asked police for a suspect description and they said they typically do not release that unless an arrest is made.
Edward Smith August 26, 2013 at 12:44 PM
That's ridiculous Michael. Why do they withhold something so important?
Judy Pepenella August 26, 2013 at 12:49 PM
Michael, I suspect the bad press is the reason the details are not being released. These issues happen and are kept hush hush ... And for the official record, I so want to be proven wrong on these remarks.
Edward Smith August 26, 2013 at 01:00 PM
Maybe they don't want to taint any eyewitness identifications by giving out the description.
Kelly August 26, 2013 at 01:17 PM
This is absolutely ridiculous!! I live on Oak Street and just last month someone tried to break into my house around 4am!! POS was never caught and even though there was a description of the guy... word never got out. Now this happens and they aren't releasing any info about these suspects. Ugh
Dawn August 26, 2013 at 03:40 PM
They should check Maple Tree or Terry apartments...
Judy Pepenella August 26, 2013 at 03:59 PM
As a resident and a person who knows that area very well...there are more than the apartment complexes to be concerned with. There are a LOT of multi-room rental homes in that area. The point is there are a LOT of places to hide around there.

Nothing like being woken up by a low flying helicopter. I felt like I was living in South Central...
Edward Smith August 26, 2013 at 07:32 PM
I spoke to someone who heard from a witness that 4 men traveling North on 112 pulled into the Hess Station on Oak St. and parked near the air pump. They chased a pedestrian who had been walking on the other side of 112 and caught him at the SE corner. They stabbed the pedestrian. A police patrol was nearby and went on foot pursuit. The helicopter as we know arrived soon. The witness reported seeing a motionless person on the ground and there is a large bloodstain on the corner still. The video tapes were taken from the Hess Station, and crime scene tape was put up as the car was impounded and the area was dusted for prints.
Andrea Rossetti-Boerner August 26, 2013 at 08:42 PM
Thank you for that update Edward, it is greatly appreciated. I hope that the police are able to find what they need on the video tape. I understand keeping some details from going public, but I think it is important to at least give some information to the immediate residents like Kelly. I live with my family on Grove and we have been strong advocates for owner occupied rentals in the village and/or stronger and more effective supervision of these rentals as they have in other townships such as Islip and Babylon. It is a serious concern for the residents here who just want to live peacefully. We once had a very effective neighborhood watch system in our part of the neighborhood, maybe it's time to revisit the program, work with the COPE officers and give the residents here back some peace of mind.
Big Mike August 26, 2013 at 09:08 PM
I work with the man who was attacked- he is elderly and is basically defenseless. He leaves his house at 3:30 in the morning and walks 1/2 hour to the LIRR to come into the city every day to help out in an auto bodyshop in Queens- roughly a 2 hour commute. He is SERIOUSLY injured and is in the hospital. These 4 thugs need to be caught! I pray for him and his family. These punks are the lowest of the low for attacking an unarmed 70 year old man. I wish this attack gets the press coverage it deserves, and I hope the police are doing everything they can. Thoughts and prayers- Mike

Ask Leg. Calarco to step up and get involved. I grew up in Patchogue and now live a few towns over. Over here we have Leg. Kate Browning. I have her on speed dial. Have people call him!!! His office is right on Main Street Patchogue.
Elizabeth K August 27, 2013 at 06:58 AM
Goodness Mike. Hardworking 70 yr old man who is walking independently.... It is disgraceful. I will pray for his recovery. Considering there was a car I am sure the public could help with where these guys are. Frightening. I hope they make arrests today. Still no coverage on the tv news
CCOP August 27, 2013 at 09:39 AM
A lot of these robberies and stabbings have been some how kept quiet. Patchogue is no longer a quiet Village.
Dawn August 27, 2013 at 09:49 AM
That's horrible these punks prey on the elderly.. I hope they catch them and I hope the man gets better soon... Maybe he should be able to stab them like they did him....
Judy Pepenella August 27, 2013 at 12:03 PM
What concerns me is the overt media blackout on this event. A man was attacked, stabbed and is in the hospital...an elderly man attacked by 4 younger men. Is that not considered a HATE crime or a crime against the elderly? Where is News 12, where is Newsday, where are the other media outlets screaming for the rights of this man? I am grateful for Michael and the Patchogue Patch for reporting ALL sides of issues. I appreciate his willingness to keep all of us posted on events and news (good and bad). I suspect this is being kept quiet to make sure no bad press hits Patchogue Village again...
Edward Smith August 27, 2013 at 02:26 PM
@Judy The fact is this story is not picked up by the media because it is happening every day in one village or another. It is the equivalent of a fender bender. Sad but true. I have been dedicating this year to publicize another type of crime that happens everyday in some small town in America but nobody realizes what an epidemic it is. Children (many of them 4 or 5 years old) get a hold of their parents guns and accidents happen. Google it. Believe me it is running rampant and nobody gets prosecuted and nobody realizes how common it is.
Judy Pepenella August 27, 2013 at 11:53 PM
@Ed Though I appreciate your reference (the equivalent of a fender bender) I think what bothers me more the outright acceptance of these types of attacks on human beings to be the norm. I find this acceptance of violence as the norm more upsetting than the actual acts of violence. Where is the outrage that an elderly man was attacked on his way to work? Do we only care about attacks that bring attention and media - the so called hate crimes? This crime AND all other attacks where a human being is attacked by another/other human being(s). Again, where is the outrage? A sidebar, I noticed the noise levels and activities outside the establishments across from the attack site are very quiet the last few days. The bar and bodega seem to have fallen silent. As for the gun issue you are referring to. That is a totally separate issue and does not apply to this thread. However, I would appreciate seeing your statistical findings and facts. I am very involved with the 2nd Amendment movement and aware of crimes and accidents that occur from guns throughout New York State AND the Country. Are you equally concerned with respect to children playing with toys (lego or water guns), playing army or drawing pictures of guns and being suspended from school AND the parents having their firearms (ALL legal and licensed) remove from their home? Feel free to email me your data at csa.1776(@)yahoo.com. I would welcome the discussion.

This was an attack with a gang of thugs with a knife. Two years ago on the corner of lake St. and Jennings Ave. A person was stabbed and robbed while walking past a slumlords house. There are more acts of crime in Patchogue with knives not guns. Bring back Code Enforcement with guns and have them patrol from 12PM to 6AM. Hire some Veterans who know how to handle thugs who attack innocent citizens.
Patchogue Snoop August 28, 2013 at 08:55 AM
Hi Judy, You are correct. The corrupt media is dedicated to selling the "race" narrative. You see, the are many more independent and conservatives than left wing loons in this country so they need to scream louder than us to create the myth that everyone believes in the same left wind radical agenda. Remember "I will fundamentally transform this country" Our Mayor allows this to happen in this village, he created a sort of sanctuary city for these people....and they came and are still coming since they know they will get a pass from Code Enforcement and SCPD. No description of the criminal???? Ludicrous!!! It is time for the people to demand changes in our towns. Vote these libs out.
Patchogue Snoop August 28, 2013 at 09:03 AM
ED Really? Are you saying take our guns away due to some BS you found on the internet? I have a better idea. Life in prison for the parent if this happens under their roof. Period. As evidenced by the huge numbers of cold blooded murders being committed by blacks lately it seems the parents have failed miserably with their children. You can thank the democrats who addicted them to their handouts to the point where they are incapable of doing anything anymore. So sad. Killing the human spirit for votes. If it wasn't for the NYC Board of Ed feeding their children each day, breakfast, lunch and sometimes after school snacks....they would starve. And that's a fact, look up the stats.
Judy Pepenella August 28, 2013 at 11:21 AM
Let's stay on this subject...guns is a topic for another thread. CCOP - IF we arm the Safety staff, they need special training and of course the weapons. I do not see that happening as our Mayor is a member of the Mayors Against Guns--the new politically correct name is Mayors Against Illegal Guns. I think the idea of hiring retired police OR veterans is a great idea. We need to have a neighborhood watch program that has teeth...and NOT a beautification watch - neighbor at this address has not cut their bushes or grass- but people working to monitor their blocks for the crap that is going on. We need SCPD involved. e need COPE on our streets, not just Central Islip, Brentwood & Huntington Station ... where crimes are a daily happening. We need STRONG code enforcement AND we NEED teeth from our Village elected when complaints about businesses who have REPEAT noise complaints, allow vagrants to hang out on the streets in parking lots and/or closed gas stations and allow people to urinate on the streets are a common happening. We need those elected outside the Village (the Town of Brookhaven) to step up to help us clean up the street. That means our elected in the Village, Brookhaven, Suffolk County to step up. Those in Albany are not in charge with the policing and housing issues...that is a local issue. As for the issue of a sanctuary city .. this is yet another subject to be discussed in another thread or blog. More importantly, I know my posts are monitored. I welcome any open and honest discussion with those in office about these issues. I moved here to this town to raise my family because I LOVE Patchogue (especially the Village)...and want to see the beauty and family structure continue... All of you have my phone number and email address.

Judy, I concur and want to thank you for standing up and fighting the good fight. We need a grass roots civic group to start getting involved with our communities. Have had major problems in my neighborhood over the years and all has fallen on deaf ears. I took care of the problems myself and will protect my family if and when it is needed. We have a drug problem once again in my neighborhood and I know that no one will do anything about it. I'm tired of fighting and thank God that I own a farm in upstate NY. Three more years and I'm gone......
Eli Perdikis August 28, 2013 at 02:53 PM
This is my uncle that this happened to. He has the sweetest soul you can imagine and didn't deserve what happened to him. On behalf of his family, we thank you sincerely for your thoughts and prayers. His spirit is strong and he's fighting to recover. It disgusts me that people can hurt others like this. He didn't deserve what happened to him. He is just an amazingly sweet person and his outlook remains positive even after what he has been through. Thank you all again. I hope they find the bastards that did this!
Michael Sorrentino (Editor) August 28, 2013 at 04:37 PM
I put up an update on this story today, it's at this link: http://bit.ly/140cs82
Kelly August 28, 2013 at 10:34 PM
@ Eli... I am glad that you were able to update us and let us know that he is recovering. I do not know him but he has been on my mind since this tragedy has happened. I hope he has a speedy recovery!! This still makes me sick to think this could happen to such an innocent man. I dont get why these 4 low life scumbags have yet to be caught. If they parked at the Hess... They should defly be on camera! Like I said in a previous post.. Someone tried to break into my house about a month ago. They broke the fence to our backyard as well and when they got caught and ran, they broke the fence at that same Hess. I am constantly looking over my shoulder everytime I come home. I know that crimes happen everywhere... But it pisses me off that this has been kept quiet. I would imagine they have some kind of description of these men, or their vehicle. Release it and allow the public to help turn these thugs in before they go after another innocent victim!!!
Judy Pepenella August 28, 2013 at 10:46 PM
@Eli...Thank you for updating us on how your Uncle is doing. Please know he is in our prayers and we hope he will have a quick recovery. Still no comments, news and or statements about this event in any other paper BUT Patchogue Patch. So is it safe to say this is not considered a hate crime worthy of discussing? I agree with Kelly...we need to know who these thugs are...we live here and are equally scared about our own families and friends. Why is there a media blackout on this?
Edward Smith August 29, 2013 at 05:23 AM
@Eli I am outraged by what happened to your Uncle and I hope the assailants are caught and severely punished. Please tell your Uncle that many in Patchogue are praying for him.
