Police: Man Seriously Hurt After Running Red Light, Crashing Into County Bus

A Ronkonkoma man was seriously injured Tuesday morning after his vehicle crashed into a Suffolk County Transit bus in North Patchogue, police said. 

Witnesses told police the driver of a 2010 Chevrolet Cobalt, Preston Campagne, went through a red light on Waverly Avenue before the crash around 9 a.m. 

The Chevy, which was heading northbound on Waverly, struck a bus that had been traveling westbound on Buckley Road and was attempting to make a left turn at a traffic light onto Waverly, police said.

Campagne, 48, was transported to Stony Brook University Hospital with serious injuries. Two of the three passengers on the bus at the time of the crash were taken to Brookhaven Memorial Hospital Medical Center with minor injuries, police said. 

The bus driver, Shane Meighan, 57, of North Babylon, was not injured.

Campagne was issued a summons for driving with a suspended license and for failing to stop at a traffic light, police said. Detectives are asking anyone with information about the crash to call the Fifth Squad at 631-854-8552.
