A Medford man was arrested Thursday and charged for three burglaries at Nassau County gyms, says Nassau County Police.
According to detectives, Richard Ray entered two New York Sports Club locations in Hicksville and Garden City on three occassions and broke into three lockers during two of the visits.
Detectives say during a Sept. 1 visit at 12 p.m. to the location at 100 Duffy Avenue in Hicksville, Ray entered one locker and took a wallet with credit cards, an iPhone, cash and keys before fleeing the gym.
On Monday, detectives say Ray went to the 833 Franklin Avenue location in Garden City at 2:30 p.m., entering into two lockers, taking cash from the first locker and car keys from the second locker. After leaving the gym, detectives say Ray used the vehicle's remote to find and steal a victim's car.
On Thursday, detectives say Ray returned to the Hicksville location at 1 p.m., but with a stolen key card that did not match his face. The desk clerk noticed the picture did not match. Ray was questioned, and then left the gym. The desk clerk then alerted the gym manager, and 911 was contacted.
Ray was located at 2 p.m. the same day on the corner of W. John Street and Strong Street in Hicksville and was arrested.
Police say that during the processing of his arrest, the stolen vehicle was found in Patchogue.
Ray is charged with three counts of burglary in the third degree, two counts of grand larceny in the fourth degree and an unrelated warrant charge, police said. Ray's arraignment is scheduled for Friday at First District Court in Hempstead.
