Police: Medford Man Dies In Single-Car Crash

20-year-old's vehicle crashes into mailbox and then tree on Jamaica Avenue, police say.

A Medford man died Wednesday afternoon in a single-car crash on Jamaica Avenue in Medford, Suffolk County Police said. 

Police say that Peter Mungo, 20, was driving a 2003 Hyundai Santa Fe westbound on Jamaica Avenue when the vehicle veered off the road, struck a mailbox and then a tree at 12:45 p.m. Mungo was removed from the vehicle by Emergency Service Section officers and transported by the Medford Volunteer Ambulance to Brookhaven Memorial Hospital Medical Center in East Patchogue. Mungo was pronounced dead at the hospital a short time later, police said.

The vehicle has been impounded for a safety check, and detectives are continuing an investigation into the crash. Anyone with information is asked to call the Fifth Squad at 631-854-8552 or anonymously to Crime Stoppers at 1-800-220-TIPS.
