Police: SUV Overturns After Striking Bus in Medford, 12 Injured

Victims taken to Brookhaven Hospital Medical Center with non-life threatening injuries.

A northbound SUV Chevy Suburban overturned after hitting a southbound Suffolk County Transit Bus on Route 112 in Medford Wednesday at 4:41 p.m., police said. 

Police report that Angie O'Connor, 34 of Medford, was making a left turn into her driveway when her vehicle struck the bus. The passengers in the vehicle were Margaret O'Connor, 18, and Ellen O'Connor, 21. All three were taken to in East Patchogue with non-life threatening injuries.

Police report that there were 16 people including the driver on the transit bus at the time of the incident. Police say children were on the bus as well. Nine of the people on the bus were also taken to the hospital for non-life threatening injuries.

Erica Montague, 20 of Mastic, told Patch that she was on the bus at the time of the incident with three children ages two months old, 14 months and 3 years and their father. All three children were fine but their father was among those taken to the hospital injured.

"Everybody flew to the front and that's when everyone got out and tried to help the people in the bushes," Montague said.

She also described shattered glass throughout the scene, and that people were helping each other out of the bus and the SUV.

Anthony Conwell also told Patch he was on the bus. Conwell said he was banged up but did not go to the hospital.

"The truck was flipped and it was flung right into the trees flipped upside down," Conwell said.

Conwell described the collision as everyone being "slingshotted" to the front of the bus.

Traffic from Commercial Boulevard to Granny Road was reported closed off soon after the accident and was re-opened by 6:45 p.m.
