Report: E. Patchogue Man Guilty of Defrauding Grandfather

Michael Ostrowski faces five years in prison for stealing $350,000 from his grandfather reports the Associated Press and The Republican.

An East Patchogue man faces five years in prison after pleading guilty on Monday to stealing around $350,000 from his grandfather in western Massachusetts who suffered from dementia, reported the Associated Press.

Michael Ostrowski, while acting as a guardian to Stanley Ostrowski of Greenfield, took money meant for nursing home bills and bought items including a $37,000 truck, a flat-screen television and an assault rifle, prosecutors said in the AP's report.

Ostrowski has agreed to forfeit the truck, the television and the rifle as part of a plea agreement to keep his sentence away from the maximum of 20 years reports The Republican.

Also according to The Republican, defense lawyers for Ostrowski attempted to suppress statements the defendant allegedly made to federal agents while his home was searched in 2008, arguing that it was illegal. Court filings reviewed by The Republican show the agents found $179,500 in his home, the assault rifle and accounting of expenditures on the back of a paper shooting target.

During the search, Ostrowski allegedly told agents that he expected their arrival.

"I always knew you guys would come some day. You can’t just walk away with $250,000 in cash and expect no one comes looking for it,” Ostrowski reportedly said.

Ostrowsi's grandfather passed away at the age of 99 in 2008.

Ostrowski plead in federal court to charges including mail fraud, conspiracy and interestate transportation of stolen property.

He is scheduled to be sentenced on April 25.
