Reports: E. Patchogue Teen Struck By Lightning

18-year-old survived strike with injuries.

An 18-year-old E. Patchogue woman was reportedly struck by lightning Sunday while attending a picnic at Hecksher State Park in East Islip, reports CBS LocalNBC New York and Newsday.

Nicole Burke was reportedly struck when an unexpected lightning storm broke out while in Parking Field 6 around 6 p.m., said New York State Park Police Captain Bruce Marx in the CBS report.

Lightning struck Burke in the head and exited through her arm. She was rushed to Stony Brook University Medical Center.

The NBC report lists Burke as suffering second-degree burns and with possible hearing loss from the incident.

A report in Newsday said that Burke was discharged Monday evening, but cited officials stating she will have to undergo tests on her hearing.

Burke's family issued a statement through the hospital thanking those asking about her.

"They are thankful that Nicole is doing well after the frightening incident of being struck by lightning," said the statement in the Newsday report. "They request that she be allowed to rest so that she can go home and return to normal as soon as possible."
