Bay Avenue Center Pushed to March at CDA

Street, crosswalk and Shorefront Park projects also discussed; agency will be honored for 30 years of service at the next village board meeting.

The ongoing Bay Avenue Community Center renovations and the Roe Walkway project were among the items discussed Thursday evening at Patchogue Village's (CDA) meeting. Their next meeting is scheduled for Jan. 6 at 7 p.m.

Bay Avenue renovations

The timeline for has been extended to March, according to . While he was hoping the project would be done in January, Keyes said that the age of the building made it more difficult than they anticipated to "get it structurally sound." Once work on the historic house, which dates back to the 1880s, is complete, it will become the Village Parks and Recreation Department's new home. The building will also be available for various senior and non-profit groups. Keyes said he hopes the renovations will be done by March 1.

Roe Walkway and Oak Street projects

The Roe Walkway project is slated to be complete by next month, according to Marion Russo, executive director of the CDA. As part of the project, an abandoned oil tank will be removed from underground, with Russo emphasizing that there was no evidence of oil leakage. "This needs to be done, and we want to make sure it's done correctly," Russo said.

As for the work on Oak Street, the project is almost complete, according to Russo. The crosswalk by has been improved with better lighting and newly painted lines, she said.

Bandshell security update

Having previously expressed concerns about security at Shorefront Park, members of the CDA are looking to install security cameras at the site. With the CDA receiving seven estimates to install cameras at the Bandshell, both Keyes and CDA member Ernest Swinson are hoping to narrow down the options next week. They hope to present their final choices for approval in January.

In addition, CDA member Toni Dean is in dialogue with the Patchogue-Medford School District to see if students can paint a mural on the Bandshell. This is being done in an effort to reduce vandalism and encourage young people to foster their creativity in a positive way. The project will likely be done in the spring, according to Dean, who said she would be contacting the district to pick a theme for the mural.

Patchogue Village CDA celebrates 30th anniversary

As 2010 comes to a close, the Patchogue Village Community Development Agency will be marking the end of its 30th Anniversary. From projects at to home renovation and façade restoration initiatives, the CDA has assisted in the betterment of homes and businesses in the village, according to Russo.

"It's the small things that people don't see that make a difference," she said.

To honor the CDA members' many accomplishments over the years, the Patchogue Village Board will be recognizing them at its , which will be held on Dec. 13. The CDA also mentioned the possibility of holding a larger celebration, including a more detailed look at the CDA's achievements, later in 2011.
