Board Passes Restrictions on Barnyard Animals

The Patchogue Village Board passed a motion that restricts the housing of non-domesticated animals

The Patchogue Village Board passed a motion to increase restrictions for barnyard animals in the area at Monday’s meeting.

According to Mayor Paul Pontieri, the law had previously restricted stables and fowl coops after a resident complained of animal noises disturbing the neighborhood.

The Board decided to expand this by including the prohibition of housing “fowl, swine, goats, sheep, cows, horses, fox mink or other non-domesticated animals” unless approved by the Board of Appeals.

“Anyone with prior coops or ownership of chickens would be grandfathered in and wouldn’t need a permit,” Trustee Lori Devlin said.

The law also bans residents from keeping a stable within 150 feet of a home, and fowl housing within 50 feet of a home.
