Town Strips Zoning for Proposed Walmart

Town Board votes to rescind the East Patchogue zoning to a smaller commercial area.

The Town of Brookhaven Board on Tuesday night voted to rescind the zoning on a plot of land in East Patchogue where owner AW Realty planned to build a Walmart. The property is now zoned for a smaller retail outlet than the proposed big-box store. As a result, AW Realty will have its $250,000 initial investment refunded.

The town's move, however, does not stop a Walmart from being constructed at the site. Attorney Linda Margolin, representative of AW Realty, at the May 18 Town Hall meeting said AW would build a smaller, 98,000-square-foot store if the zoning was rescinded.

AW Realty also owns the La Bonne Vie apartment complex located near the land proposed for the Walmart. Margolin had also said at the last meeting that the owner had planned to place a retail outlet in the location for more than 35 years.
