LIE At 63 Scheduled For Closure Tonight

Closures will continue Tuesdays, Thursdays and Sundays until May 5.

The Department of Transportation has announced that beginning tonight the westbound lanes of the Long Island Expressway at Exit 63/North Ocean Avenue will be closing at 10 p.m.

The lane closures will run from 10 p.m. to 5 a.m. on Tuesday, Thursday and Sunday nights through May 5, weather permitting. During that time motorists will be detoured to the LIE service road.

The DOT says the closure is needed in order to perform repairs to the North Ocean Avenue bridge, now known as the Lt. Richard Nappi Memorial Bridge, which suffered damage after it was struck by an over-height truck last month.

The department is warning that, as is the case with most bridge repair projects, the work is weather dependent and may be canceled, postponed, or prolonged if weather conditions don’t cooperate. Motorists will be warned with electronic signs throughout the day, but are advised to plan ahead and use alternate routes to avoid traffic delays.
