Open House Provides Insight on MacArthur Airport Development

An open house event, where residents can review planning concepts for Long Island MacArthur Airport, will be held Wednesday, Dec. 4 at the airport from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m.

Town of Islip officials as well as the airport planning consultant, Landrum & Brown, will be exhibiting a number of planning concepts as part of the airport’s on-going study related to the future development of the airport.

It is the second public event on airport planning. The first took place in the summer of 2012, according to town officials. Public comments are welcome in written format and materials for comment submission will be provided during the open house.  There will be no formal presentations.

Town and airport officials will answer questions from the community and to receive written and oral recommendations from those in attendance.

The Town of Islip owns and operates MacArthur Airport, located in Ronkonkoma, and more than 5,000 people fly in and out MacArthur, making it one of the top 90 airports in the United States.

The airport covers an area of 1,311 acres containing four runways and two helipads. The airport services approximately two million commercial passengers a year, as well as a general aviation sector.

The FAA designated MacArthur Airport an Official Metro Airport in early 2011, meaning it is now grouped with LaGuardia, JFK and Newark in travel and informational searches for New York airports, providing better exposure to the traveling public.
