Plaza Theatre Demolition Delayed Post-Irene

Abandoned theatre originally scheduled for demolition Tuesday will stand a little longer.

The Plaza Theatre will stand just a little longer than expected as the Town of Brookhaven has cancelled .

A new date has not yet been announced for the abandoned theatre's demolition. Brookhaven Town supervisor Mark Lesko cancelled the event in order to mobilize personnel for emergency clean-up and recovery efforts said the Town in a statement.

As , the theatre, which has been since the 1980s, has remained vacant on East Main Street since its closing. Brookhaven Town took of the theatre in March from its former owner, East Main Realty Corp, through an order of condemnation after the owner rejected a $1.2 million offer from the Town.

The theatre will be by of Setauket at a cost not to exceed $23,869.

Town officials have previously said that they hope to redevelop the half acre of property as part of other projects in the East Main Street corridor.

Postpone Plaza Theatre Demolition 

Farmingville, NY –Supervisor Mark Lesko and Councilman Tim Mazzei  announced today that the demolition of the Plaza Theatre, which was scheduled to begin on Tuesday, August 30 at 10:00 am, has been postponed with a new date to be determined. This action was taken by the Supervisor due to the damage caused by Hurricane Irene, and his mobilization of all personnel from the Town’s Highway, Waste Management and Public Safety Departments for emergency clean-up and recovery efforts.
