Plaza Theatre Demolition Rescheduled for Sept. 13

Theatre demolition rescheduled after Tropical Storm Irene.

UPDATE 9/7/11 10:47 a.m.: The demolition is rescheduled to 2:30 p.m. on Sept. 13.

Following the delay of its from Tropical Storm Irene, Brookhaven Town announced that the Plaza Theatre will now be knocked down on Tuesday, Sept. 13 at 2:30 p.m.

The Town will continue to take RSVPs to the event through its website.

Brookhaven Town supervisor Mark Lesko cancelled the original date in order to mobilize personnel for emergency clean-up and recovery efforts after last weekend's storm.

As , the theatre, which has been since the 1980s, has remained vacant on East Main Street since its closing. Brookhaven Town took of the theatre in March from its former owner, East Main Realty Corp, through an order of condemnation after the owner rejected a $1.2 million offer from the Town.

The theatre will be by of Setauket at a cost not to exceed $23,869.

Town officials have previously said that they hope to redevelop the half acre of property as part of other projects in the East Main Street corridor.
