Required Fence Policy Set For Village Residents

Residents will be required to construct future fences in a specific way.

A required, good neighbor fence policy was approved at Monday’s Patchogue Village Board of Trustees meeting at Patchogue Village Hall.

The policy will require Village residents, when putting up a fence, to make sure the stockade (the nicer) side of a fence faces out to the other neighbor and not the rail (less nicer) side.

Exceptions can be made in which the neighbor does not mind having the rail side facing them, but Village Attorney Brian Egan said that it is recommended to get that in writing in case a future neighbor moving into the residence does have a preference.

Existing fences will also be exempt from the policy.

Deputy Mayor Jack Krieger told Patch after the meeting that the policy came up likely as a result of a resident complaint.

Violations would result in fines.
