Resident Seeks Permission to Rent Space For Medical Costs

Copper Beach Village resident approached the Village Board seeking approval for a rental unit to help with medical finances for her daughter.

A Patchogue resident who is taking care of a 2-year-old daughter with a rare blood disorder is seeking the Village Board's permission to rent out her home to afford medical costs.

Lori Patton, who lives in the , brought the hardship report to Monday's meeting at Village Hall. Patton has to request permission because the rules and regulations of Copper Beach Village strictly say they are not to be rented, but considering she has a special situation, the board will be looking into it to see if they can make an exception.

According to Patton, her daughter must undergo a bone marrow transplant. She receives blood transfusions every few weeks from Stony Brook University Hospital, a major expense, and her family plans on relocating for the transplant depending on which medical location they choose.

‘It’s certainly been a financial strain, and we also don’t want the property value to go down in the community,” Patton said. “We’d like special permission to rent it out for a year.”

The Board plans on looking into the issue and examining the legal aspects of the situation, as per Village Attorney Brian Egan.

“Egan will look into the restrictions and we’ll make a decision based on his research,” Krieger said. “We want to make sure we’re doing the right thing for everybody.”
