South Setauket Nicolls Road Intersections to See Changes

Residents are encouraged to attend an informational meeting on Monday at 6 p.m. at Suffolk Community College.

Three intersections on Nicolls Road in South Setauket are slated for updates, and residents will have the chance to learn more about the project, comment and ask questions at an informational meeting coming up on Monday in Selden.

Intersections at Mark Tree Road, Hawkins and Wireless Roads, and Hammond Road will see various changes, including widening, extension or addition of turning lanes; timing of traffic lights and upgraded signals; crosswalks and pedestrian ramps; and more.

According to Suffolk Legis. Kara Hahn, D-Setauket, in whose legislative district the intersections fall, the changes make up the fifth of a six-phase improvement project along one of the county's most important roads.

"Nicolls Road is such a vital artery," Hahn said. "People from all over the district and from other districts utilize it for sure. I think it's important that the people who use that road every day have the opportunity to comment."

The meeting is set for 6 p.m. at the Babylon Student Center on the Suffolk County Community College campus in Selden. For more information on the project, visit http://www.cr97.org/.

Speaking of road changes, does anyone else think the intersection where Stony Brook Rd. and Rt. 25A meet would be better served with a traffic circle instead of the stop signs?

I hope that Ms Kara Hahn and the State also are concerned about the effects this project will have on the children that walk to/from Murphy Jr. H.S. (Nichols Rd./Oxhead Rd). This intersection will be the first traffic signal that north bound drivers will encounter. In excess of 100,000 cross that intersection (see traffic study). "I hope there are updated crosswalks and pedestrian ramps" or elevated pedestrian walkway @ this intersection.

Leg. Hahn is too busy pushing to prevent fracking waste from being recycled on Long Island, a scenario which theoretically possible is economically difficult. You know fracking.........the pathway to cheap energy that all liberal politicians despise, even while it is proven to be safe for years. see Frack Nation January 22 at 930 pm Even former PA Governor Ed Rendell says NY is crazy for not allowing fracking in Marcellus Shale.

Fracking is one of the worst practices around. I'm for cheap energy, as long as its safe. Fracking is far from safe!

What about the traffic lights at 347? They will be encountered before the Murphy kids cross 347. Just give those kids a bus, 3 Village. All the traffic lights in the world will not protect them from the speeding university, hospital, firehouse, and commuter traffic at the intersection which those kids have to cross!
