State officials plan to eliminate all of the wild mute swans in New York, either by capturing or killing them.

Under the proposed plan, adult swans in public waters could be shot or euthanized, or they could be caught by those licensed to keep them in captivity.

Mute swans are most prevalent on Long Island and the lower Hudson Valley.

"Mute swans can cause a variety of problems, including exhibiting aggressive behavior towards people, destruction of submerged aquatic vegetation, displacement of native wildlife species, degradation of water quality and potential hazards to aviation," Department of Environmental Conversation representatives said.

This plan aims at eliminating mute swans from New York State by 2025, while allowing ownership of some of these birds in captivity.

Comments on the draft mute swan plan may be submitted in writing through Jan. 31 to: NYSDEC Bureau of Wildlife, Swan Management Plan, 625 Broadway, Albany, NY 12233-4754 or by e-mail to fwwildlf@gw.dec.state.ny.us (please type "Swan Plan" in the subject line).

Are they crazy? No one causes more damage to this planet than we do. Are we next?
Emily January 17, 2014 at 01:15 PM
I agree with the previous comment. What in the world are they thinking! The swans are part of the culture of this island. If they're aggressive to humans I suppose the human must have gotten into their space. We won't be next, we're just the species that is looking to eliminate any other creatures! It's been a long time since I've read something this crazy....

this is insane, they want to kill the swans but do nothing about feral cats or the destructive squirrels that are every where getting into peoples attics and chimneys and what about geese are they next as well?
Laura miller January 17, 2014 at 04:16 PM
I agree this is insane! How can this in anyway be a good way to spend our money? How about fixing roads and sidewalks?
Dennis Barone January 17, 2014 at 05:28 PM
INSANITY, we must tell our governor this is unacceptable. His political future should depend on his actions in this. @Emily I really was trying to be funny...

I am going to contact Albany...this is absolute cruelty!
Patchogue Snoop January 19, 2014 at 10:36 AM
Stop the hysteria!!! They are not supposed to be here. It is not cruel, these birds eat eggs of wild ducks by the dozens each day including the young babies. They take over their nests amongst other negatives. I am siding with the many species of wild duck on this one. They were here first, belong here and isn't it cruel to be eaten alive by a swan! They gotta go!
Patchogue Snoop January 19, 2014 at 10:38 AM
Squirrels are animals too. SO.... we off them cause they may get in your chimney? Are you aware of the natural cycle they are part of in our ecosystem. The swans don't go into your house but hurt other wildlife and they are OK to carry on?
Patchogue Snoop January 19, 2014 at 10:41 AM
After reading about Obama allowing the Iranian's to fully develop their nukes without American interference, in a spectacular foreign failure....again,(Hillary does this matter???) we may very well be next on the hit list!!! I guess he is living up to his middle name Hussein. Unreal.

If they are serious they should wipe out the non wild ducks that escaped from long gone duck farms and bred in the wild. They are disgusting and pollute the local ponds with their droppings. Please don't feed these mutants. Ditto for sea gulls. Don't feed them on the docks, they don't need any food to survive and you are creating a bird dependent on handouts...no good. Not to mention pounds of bread being thrown all over attracting rats.
Linda January 19, 2014 at 01:03 PM
squirrels are simply rats with fluffy tails and for your attitude that these swans dont belong here that they just took over and destroy everything, well you just described the human race so should we all be wiped out because we take over and destroy? If one group of animal is going to be targeted for its destructive over whelming numbers well then all should be included for that matter
Dennis Barone January 19, 2014 at 05:49 PM
Snoop, you and I usually agree but on this one I have to disagree. Humans also migrated. What if we were killed off????
Patchogue Snoop January 20, 2014 at 05:20 PM
I think the libs on this site are trying to do just that! LOL
Patchogue Snoop January 20, 2014 at 05:24 PM
So to save a swan we are talking about destruction of the human race......heavy man...heavy I guess since Swans are pretty, they live for Linda. The poor grey squirrel is just a rat with a fluffy tail....so they die....really heavy man...really heavy.
Dennis Barone January 20, 2014 at 06:09 PM
Here's where we sort of agree...all animals are sacred to this planet...anything that lives on Long Island, even the squirrels should be left alone. There are owls and foxes that probably do as much damage as the swans. Should they be destroyed also? Where do we stop? Raccoons are annoying, so are opossum and the list goes on. I certainly am not a lib, pinko left winger. Animal life is sacred unless it attacks you and then that animal or person for that matter should go...
Patchogue Snoop January 21, 2014 at 09:36 AM
True. I was bit by a swan working on my boat once. Hitler used them in place of watch dogs. I side with our indigenous species. The ducks need a break, it seems they are on the comeback. Rather have native species than those swans. Fox and owls are part of the original ecosystem and by nature are designed to weed out the weak, not gobble wild duck eggs and young ducks in their nests then take it over. PS My friend has been trapping fox for certain towns for decades.....shhhhh. Yes, they eat a lot of eggs but again they are natural local predators. I just laugh at the hypocrisy, it is everyone's right to have an opinion, this is America. But some will kill certain wild animals because they don't like them in their world but protect others just cause they are cute.....
