Your LIRR Commute After Sandy

With commuter anger boiling over repairs to East River Tunnels, we want to know how your commute has been going.

There have been many challenges in the area since Hurricane Sandy struck last month, but one of the biggest has been fixing our damaged rail system.

A major issue has been the repair of two East River tunnels owned by Amtrak which the Long Island Rail Road uses to get into Manhattan.

Rep. Steve Israel, D-Huntington, held a press conference in which he said he received assurances from Amtrak that the tunnels would be repaired by Christmas week.

There is a possible partial solution to the packed evening rush hour trains: Run express trains originating at Woodside. Yes, the trains to Woodside would still be packed, but then you could change to an express with seats available. C'mon LIRR, it's not rocket science!

I wholeheartedly agree with the posts. The pm trains are the absolute worst. The over-crowding is ridiculous and the commute times onerous. Not only are the trains local, but because note all cars platform at all stations, there are long delays as we wait for folks to make their way through crowded train cars to get out. And as for any communication from the LIRR, it's non-existent. People try to chat up the train conductors just to get some info. Certainly no way to run a railroad! Literally!!
