Republican Lee Zeldin handily defeated Democrat Frank Genco Tuesday to hold onto his State Senate seat.
With 201 of 205 districts reporting, Zeldin held a 56-44 percent lead (48,223-37,143) over Genco, a former member of the East Islip Board of Education.
The 3rd Senate District includes Hauppauge, Ronkonkoma, Patchogue, Medford, Bayport-Blue Point and portions of Sayville.
Zeldin posted this statement on his Facebook page Wednesday:
"Yesterday, I was given the privilege to represent the residents of the 3rd Senatorial District for these next two years. I would like to thank everyone for your support...the voters, my great volunteers and staff, and especially my family, including my wife, Diana, and daughters, Mikayla and Arianna. This is an important time for our community, state and nation, and we need strong leaders at every level government to work together to improve our economy and way of life. It's an honor to be chosen to do my part for you in the NY State Senate."
Zeldin told Patch last month that he was running for re-election to build on the success he achieved in my first term and to continue his efforts to cut taxes, reduce wasteful spending and create jobs.
