Candidate Spotlight: Brett Houdek

Brett Houdek, incumbent Patchogue-Medford school district board of education member, is running against candidate Christine Rignola to keep his seat on the Patchogue-Medford school district’s Board of Education.

Houdek has served on the board since 2006, when he replaced a departing board member mid-term. Upon finishing that term, Houdek was elected in 2008 for a three-year term. Houdek has had children graduate from the Patchogue-Medford school district.

“My main goal is to never fall back into the financial misteps that deprived our students of all the opportunities they deserve,” Houdek said.

Houdek said that during his time on the board, he has been a part of making choices to guide the district through a financially difficult time.

“We established funds knowing that we were going to lose state aid,” Houdek said. Houdek said that as a result, no programs are being completely eliminated despite necessary cuts.

Houdek also cited hiring superintendent Michael Locantore in July as another positive choice for the district.

“The board sought out and selected a superintendent with educational skills and strong ties and committment to the community,” Houdek said.

Houdek also said that transparency of information was also brought during his tenure.

“Our finances are on the website. Full disclosure is being provided so taxpayers can see we are using their money wisely and not wasting it on items that don’t provide gains in academic achievement,” Houdek said.
