School recently held barbecue to welcome new freshman class.

Contributed by Lucille Martir, Assistant Principal at Patchogue-Medford High School.

On August 23, Patchogue-Medford High School hosted the annual Freshman Orientation BBQ.

This event started with a welcome from Patchogue-Medford High School Principal Dr. Rusielewicz, General Organization Secretary Meagan Bullard, and Sophomore Class president Paige Meyer.

Tours were led by Patchogue-Medford High School National Honor Society and ROTC members. Friends from the Patchogue-Medford Public Library shared events and support services for students. The BBQ, hosted by parent volunteers, culminated the event. Fun was had by all!

I'm happy the High School hosts these events to make kids feel they 'fit in', but..... My comment is about the 'amp' level of the loudspeakers used on the High School playing fields during events. Not sure what was gong on yesterday (September 19) but a contractor doing work in my backyard next to the HS was shocked by the extreme volume emanating from the School's speakers. He couldn't believe we hadn't already complained. It was literally to the point he couldn't hold a conversation either with his workers or myself. THAT loud. In addition, it was rap or hip-hop, 'modern' rock style music so had extremely loud bass lines (unmusical to our slightly jaded ears) ;) I'm really not picking on someone's musical tastes--I'm a musician and LOVE my own music loud 'enough', but the acoustics in our small part of the world are a bit odd--the sound echoes and bounces around. Always has--especially since the 'new' addition to the school. There has to be a solution--some happy medium. We've had no real quarrel living next to the HS over the years but our Contractor had one very salient point: IF I was selling my home, I would have lost potential buyers all afternoon because of the unbelievably high level of this blastingly loud music to which we were held hostage. He's ready to quit the job! It can't be good for the students' ears either: some musicians I know are now being forced into wearing hearing aids after years of playing with loud bands. PLEAAAASE someone listen!
