PMHS Science Class Place Top 5 In Nationwide Contest

AP Environmental Science class wins $80,000 in equipment and grants and now has a chance to win up to $155k.

will be receiving $80,000 in equipment, software and grants as a result of the efforts of students in Robert Borowski's AP Environmental Science class.

As by Patch, the class submitted a video as part of the Samsung Solve for Tomorrow contest that documents the students testing water conditions in local rivers and streams to find the effectiveness of the new Patchogue wastewater treatment facility.

The video was reviewed by a panel of experts and nominated as a finalist. The nomination accounts for 60 percent of the video's evaluation score, with the remaining 40 percent coming from on-line voting. The overall winner of the contest will be announced on April 7 at the Samsung Experience in New York City.

The winning school will receive a prize package from Samsung that will include $155,000 in equipment and grants, according to the contest's website.

Borowski said his class is excited about the news. He found out late Tuesday and told his class Wednesday morning.

Other finalists include Kokhanok School in Kokhanok, Alaska; South Shore Charter Public School in Norwell, Massachusetts; West Salem High School in Salem, Oregon; and Wheeling High School in Wheeling, Illinois.
