South Country School Budget Re-Vote Tuesday

Newly proposed budget does not require supermajority.

South Country School District, which includes East Patchogue and Bellport in its area, is re-voting for its 2013-2014 budget Tuesday at Bellport Middle School, 35 Kreamer Street in Bellport.

The newly proposed budget is $118,727,666 and a 0.98 percent tax levy increase. Unlike the previously failed budget, approval will only require a simple majority.

The budget is a proposed increase of $61.26 per year on the average home in the South Country School District, according to the district’s budget presentation on their website.

Should the budget fail again, the district will be required to create a budget that has the same tax levy as the current year. According to the budget presentation PDF on the district’s website, additional cuts would have to be made should that happen. Possible reduction areas listed in the presentation include reducing full-day kindergarten to half-day, elimination of interscholastic sports, clubs and summer school as well as raising of class sizes.
