Sayville Running Company's 10-Mile Run to the Blue Point Brewery was supposed to take place this past Saturday, but postponed it to this Saturday, Jan. 15 at 8:30 a.m.
The race starts at the in Patchogue, goes through the suburbs of Blue Point and Bayport into Sayville and then back to the brewery.
Last week, Greater Long Island Running Club President, Mike Polansky, was obligated to inform the some 500 runners who had registered for the original date, as well as everyone else involved, that the run was being postponed.
“We were called by the Fifth Precinct noontime Thursday and told that we were closed down based on the weather forecasts for [the weekend],” Polansky said.
Between the conditions of the road, and the obstacles that the runners would have caused for plows, it was enough for the Town of Brookhaven Highway Department to postpone the event.
“It was their call, not ours.”
Those unable to attend the rescheduled date can have their entry fee refunded on request, and registration remains open through Jan. 14.
Although 2011 marks the first official time the company is running the event, this run is no stranger to the area.
“We have been doing an informal fun run from the Brewery every January for the past three years,” Polansky said. “We decided to formalize it this year.”
Both Polansky’s club and the Sayville Running Company are working together on the event, which has now been rescheduled for Jan. 15.
The 10-Mile Run to the Blue Point Brewery is the only 10-mile run held in Suffolk County—and only one of two held on all Long Island.
The GLIRC, Long Island’s largest running club, holds several other runs in addition to next Saturday’s.
These include the David Lerner Police Appreciation Run, the Long Island Women's Run, the Ocean to Sound Relay as well as the Carter, DeLuca Farrell & Schmidt Ho Ho Ho Holiday Run.
Polansky, the Sayville Running Company and the 500-plus registered runners will have to wait to this Saturday to kick off their running season—of course, only if Mother Nature says so, that is.
"Everything will be the same next Saturday," Polansky added. "And hopefully, it will be sunny and 50 degrees!."
