College Sports Notebook

A glance at the athletic happenings at St. Joseph's and Briarcliffe.

Each week Patchogue Patch will run a notebook highlighting the top achievements and happenings for St. Joseph's and Briarcliffe sports.

St. Joseph's Soccer Piling Up Stats

While the Golden Eagles (6-3-1, 10-7-1) might be stuck in the middle of the pack as far as standings are concerned, they have a few individual rankings that are very impressive.

Strikers John Dettori and Stephan Zaech top just about every statistical category in the Skyline Conference. Dettori, a sophomore, leads the conference in goals (14) and shots (82). He's second in points with 30.

You don't have to go too far to find the Skyline points leader. Zaech, a senior, takes those honors with 31. He is directly behind his teammate in goals (12) and shots (68) and is tied for third with fellow teammate Terrence Dzus in the assists column with seven.

Goalkeeper Ricky Meschkow is tied for second in shutouts with five, as well.

Briarcliffe Men's Soccer Top Standings

The Seahawks, on the other hand, might not jump off the page with individual statistics, but they make up for in the standings.

Briarcliffe is right back where they left of in the 2009 campaign - where they came within a penalty kick to winning the USCAA National Title - to once again be atop the leaderboards.

The Seahawks (9-1) are ranked No. 2 overall in the coaches poll and will once again be a threat in the National tournament scheduled for Nov. 5-7 in Vermont.

Golden Eagles Post Shutout Streak

The Golden Eagles women's soccer team (9-1, 13-6-1) finished the 2010 regular season with authority. They posted six consecutive shutouts to close the season, helping them to their first-place record in the Skyline Conference. Goalkeeper Michelle Gulino was a major part in SJC's success this season, as she finished in the top-10 of every stat category for netminders—including No. 1 in shutouts with eight.
