Check out this week's college sports action.

The men's basketball team opened up its season this week in a decisive fashion, as the Golden Eagles destroyed Vaughn, 111-69, in a non-conference matchup.

Junior forward Steve Velazquez lead all SJC scorers with 18 points, while senior John Eugene took down nine boards. Vaughn (3-2) is a member of the Hudson Valley Athletic Conference.

Head Coach John Mateyko, entering his 10th season, will look to lead his team to another impressive season - 20-7 last year - as the Golden Eagles were selected fourth overall in the Skyline Conference pre-season coaches poll.

Junior point guard Chris Jiminez, who is one of the top players at his position in the Skyline Conference, finished with 11 points, 5 assists and went 3-of-4 from three-point range.

The women's team doesn't start its season until next Tuesday, when they take on Lehman in a non-conference game. The women were selected eighth in the coaches poll.

Diving into Skyline action

The women's swimming and diving team (0-1) will have its first conference meet on Tuesday, Nov. 23 at 7 p.m. as they travel to Old Westbury.

Four-peat on the horizon

St. Joseph's is on pace to win its fourth-consecutive Skyline Conference Presidents Cup, as their strong fall performance put them ahead of the pack.

St. Joseph's, which has won the Skyline Conference Presidents Cup each of the past three years since its inception in 2007-08, according to the school, won both the Skyline Conference men's and women's cross country championships this fall.

In addition, the Golden Eagles earned a runner-up finish in golf. The women's soccer team finished first during the regular season before falling in the semifinals of the Skyline tournament.

Mount Saint Mary and Farmingdale State Colleges are the Golden Eagles' strongest competition heading into the winter program.
