A quick glance at the athletic news of St. Joseph's College.

The Golden Eagles basketball team continued its winnings ways this past week. picked up its first two wins in Skyline Conference play, defeating NYU-Poly and Sage, improving its record to 5-1 overall.

Their first win in the conference came after they handily defeated NYU-Poly on Tuesday, 92-76. Junior forward Steve Velazquez lead the scoring charges, putting up 28 points, while draining six three-pointers.

Saturday afternoon, the Golden Eagles took their talents upstate to the Kahl Center in Albany, where they defeated Sage, 93-85.

Velazquez had another impressive outing, scoring 21 points, but, SJC was led by guard Laurent Olivier, who netted 22 points.

The Golden Eagles will host conference rival Old Westbury Wednesday night, and the SJC-Brooklyn campus on Saturday afternoon.

Women's basketball earns first victory

SJC defeated USMMA, 79-64, Thursday night, picking up their first "W" on the season.

Unfortunately, that win was sandwiched between two more losses for the women's team, dropping their record to 1-4.

SJC lost to NYU-Poly, 66-53, on Tuesday, and also fell to Sage, 65-61, in a close Skyline Conference matchup.

Forward Amanda Bender led the Golden Eagles in scoring in their victory over USMMA, scoring 18 points, while guard Ashley Larrea had eight rebounds.

The Golden Eagles hit the court again tonight, as they travel to Connecticut to take on Albertus Magnus College.

SJC school records broken in track and field

The women's track and field season kicked off in big fashion Sunday afternoon. Two relay records were snapped at the annual CTC Relay Carnival at Yale University.

"The women were led by freshman Gillian Goodwin and senior captain Patty Schimmenti competing in the 6400-meter relay breaking the previous SJC record by over 90 seconds with a time of 26:13.25," an official SJC press release said. "They were joined by freshman Victoria Harrison and Jenna Pearsall."

The women also broke the 3200-meter relay record, with a time of 11:10.89, when they were joined by junior Krista Sanniola.

Men also break school records

Evan and Eric Haun, along with Max James, Michael Lombardi and Paul Milazzo combined their efforts in breaking school records in the 3200-meter relay and the distance medley relay.

However, the most dominant record-setting performance came later on in the day, during the sprint medley relay.

The team of Milazzo, Sean Meehan, Anthony Poto and Terrance Dzus, destroyed the previous school record by 22 seconds, posting a time of 3:54.41.

The next event will be Friday, Jan. 7, at the Metropolitan Coaches Invitational.
