Lacrosse Team Celebrated at Senior Night

Team reflects on record and future.

The Patchogue-Medford Raiders Lacrosse team held their senior night celebration prior to the team's Friday game against Copiague at .

Senior Kevin Gerard, who is among the leading goal scorers on the team, was perhaps the most celebrated out of all the seniors.  After the game, people in the stands screamed “Kevin we’ll miss you!” as he hugged his teammates and coaches.

Gerard said he will be attending the United States Military academy in West Point, where he will continue play lacrosse. He will serve in the military for five years and after graduating from West Point.

As for the lacrosse team, although key seniors such as Gerard are leaving, underclassmen such as sophomore Tyler DeLuca will return next season.

“He’s probably got 40 goals now, which is pretty good for a 10th grader,” head coach Steve Mollot said, referring to Deluca’s play in Friday’s game and for the whole season. “I’m looking forward to having him for another two years.”

On the season overall, Mollot says he’s disappointed that they, most likely, will not qualify for the playoffs. According to Mollot, there were a few losses, particularly those to Commack and North Babylon that will prevent the team from making the postseason.

Despite the disappointment, Mollot remains optimistic about the team’s future. “We’re getting better, and we’ll see what happens.”

According to Mollot, a win in the last game of the season would see the team finish with a .500 record for the first time in four years.

Patchogue-Medford will finish the season on Monday with a home game against William Floyd at 4:30 p.m.
