John Papanek is being inducted as a sports journalist, reports the LI Advance.

John Papanek, a 1969 graduate of Patchogue High School, was recently announced as one of nine people that will be inducted into the Suffolk Sports Hall of Fame in 2013, reports the Long Island Advance.

Papanek is being inducted as a sports journalist. According to his LinkedIn profile, he worked as Managing Editor at Sports Illustrated Magazine from 1973-1992 and later worked in various editorial positions at ESPN's magazine, website and digital media edition from 1997 until 2011.

Papanek told the Advance that his former high school classmates are why he was nominated to be inducted.

"I am not making [it into the Hall of Fame] as an athlete. I am making this as a journalist. I wouldn't be here if I didn't have these guys around me to start my career," Papanek says in the story.

Papanek's first sports stories were published in the Advance, which he worked at during high school.
