Patchogue-Medford Varsity Football Coach Gary Marangi has been award the New York Jets High School Football Coach of the Week for the tri-state area after his team put together a dominating 31-7 performance over reigning LI Champion Floyd on Friday night.

"I'm very appreciative as is our high school principal of the many contributions of Gary Marangi," Tom Combs, the district athletic director told Newsday. "We see his influence everywhere from the classroom to the field. He's an outstanding individual. He has developed a relationship with the students in school and it's translating onto the field."

Marangi is in his second year as head coach of the Raiders and at 2-1, they are right in the thick of the standings- locked in a virtual tie, points-wise, for second place in D1. The Raiders will head to Ward Melville on Saturday afternoon to take on the equally 2-1 Patriots.

Before taking the head job at Pat-Med, Marangi was the offensive coordinator at Sachem East. He inherited the offense after then-coordinator Mark Wojciechowski was tapped to become the head coach at East. Under coach Wojciechowski, Marangi helped the Arrows move from the bottom of the standings, to earning the young program's first playoff victory over West Islip in November of 2011.

Marangi played three seasons with the Buffalo Bills, mostly in a backup role. He threw 12 touchdowns in 19 games from 1974-1976.

The Jets award is in its 18th year of existence and serves to recognize coaches who excel at teaching fundamentals, motivating student athletes and contributing to the overall environment of their community.
