The Urban Archeologist: Beating the Early Birds

Tip: Be the early Bird, but not too early.

I have been to more sales than most, but not as many as others. For a longtime I would brag that I wasn’t an early bird, and I am still not. What is an early bird?

An early bird is someone who shows up to a sale before it has begun. If you travel to any sale before the start time, you will likely see them creating a line from the entrance.  Estate sale service companies have mostly come to accept the flocks of early birds as a necessary evil.

The idea of “numbers at 8” was born out of a way to handle the crowds, keep them organised and inject some fairness to those that maybe needed to step out of line for a second. This is not the same for regular family or neighborhood tag sales. Early birds can be legally hunted if they get too aggressive with the simple sales.

For the first time, I decided to be the early bird at a local estate sale this weekend in the town Marbledale, CT. A town so small it can honestly be considered a “dale.” Not only did I come away with some unique items. I also got to witness what the other early birds were flying away with.
