Helping to Feed Our Community 2

According to the U.S. Government, 5.1% of New York households experience severe food insecurity.

According to the US Department of Agriculture, food security for a household means that “all household members have access at all times to enough food for an active, healthy life.” An annual food security survey is conducted by the U.S. Census Bureau. Households are classified as food secure if there is a ready availability of nutritionally adequate and safe foods and  if households acquire food in socially acceptable ways.

During 2010 12.9 % of New York State households surveyed had some form of food insecurity and 5.1% of households surveyed described their food insecurity as severe.

Patchogue Neighbors INN recognizes that a percentage of households in our community are also food insecure. If our community mirrors the state, then approximately 153 households experience severe food insecurity and 387 households experience moderate food insecurity.
