Then it struck me…I have no idea what it is like to be without food! So how could I possibly understand how these guests actually felt?

This past week I had a chance to talk to some of our guests at Saturday morning breakfast. I was surprised by the overwhelming gratitude that each expressed for the meal that they had just been served. My surprise was not that these individuals were grateful for a meal, but rather how grateful they seemed to be.

Then it struck me…I have no idea what it is like to be without food! So how could I possibly understand how these guests actually felt?

Last night my wife and I watched the HBO documentary, Hard Times: Lost on Long Island, a compelling look at the erosion of jobs on Long Island since 2008. It is a sobering reality that for many Long Islanders, there is no longer any financial security in their future. Mortgages go unpaid, bankruptcies are filed and homes are foreclosed on at an alarming rate.

This is why it is important that those of us who have the means, do something to help our fellow human beings.  We never know what the outcome of our generosity will be. As I found out on Saturday morning, the impact that we have on a person in need may go far beyond anything we can imagine. As Albert Schweitzer once commented:

 “Wherever a man turns he can find someone who needs him. “
