In general and IMHO- Its not HOW much money - It is: How and where the money is spent ,Read More more importantly What the priorities are of the SD and the parents. Many of the schools that did make the list have a unique philosophy especially here on LI. I refer to "'A Teacher's" post above . He quoted Mr. Cardillo the Superintendent of Manhasset - Manhasset's priorities are ACADEMICS - The Arts - Athletics and After school activities in THAT order. Its seems many Parents have fallen for and vigorously support the underperforming or mediocre SD mantra's.... "Well rounded gets your child into college not necessarily well educated." Those SD's priorities are Athletics, Activities , Arts and academics.- Each and every year SD''s throw HUNDREDs of thousand of dollars to HS sports alone sometimes over a MILLION!! . Yet they have over crowding on the elementary school levels, they have cut Art and music programs, reading programs and have eliminated student services, replaced teachers with unqualified Aides and eliminated course offerings. YET Each YR School districts INCREASE their Athletic budgets and DECREASE Academics. MANY SD's athletic budgets EXCEED a million dollars on the HS level alone. The number of lovely multi million dollar turf fields is growing yet MANY SD still have asbestos in their schools and their IT infrastructures are pathetic. YET no one complains or votes a budget down because it will "effect the kids" HOW they are spending and prioritize our tax dollars IS effecting the kids NOW........ but many just buy into the SD;s threats ...
Concerned mother of 3 April 24, 2014 at 09:34 am
The national list is comprised of all charter and private schools. I can't pay 17,000 per year perRead More child. Sorry. I think they are doing great in our PS system. My husband went to public school from grade school through college while many of his coworkers went to fancy boarding schools. That might have been a savings for their parents. My brother went to a very expensive private boys high school and has nothing to show for it. I went to a huge public high school and have a masters degree and no student loans. Where you go to high school (or college for that matter) doesn't really impact anything unless you are trying for a political office later in life.
Christopher Wendt April 24, 2014 at 10:51 am
@ Concerned mother of 3 re: "My brother went to a very expensive private boys high school andRead More has nothing to show for it." I think your brother found out that he was probably not the right material for that school. You, as many of the commenters, here, are vainly trying to equate money spent on education with results attained. NO SUCH FORMULA EXISTS! ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- @ John Dutton re: "Given the money that's been spent, it's time for a comment from the school board on this apparent failure." Again there is no formula connecting money spent with results attained. But more to your specific comment, no school district of which I am aware pays any attention to these media specials...I mean, unless they "luck-in" to a high placement on some list. Then its all "look at us!" Utter nonsense.

The bottom line is if these were grown adults no one would care they were shot, well sorry justRead More because they are teenagers does not make it any worst than if they were in their 50's. If roles were reversed and this elderly man broke into the teenagers home they would get a metal of honor if they shot him, same as he should for shooting them. I will teach my kids you threaten someones life you will be lucky if you leave the situation alive.

@ Bryan Rivera: The taxi company award is the most simple, sensible and cost effective idea I'veRead More ever heard on "preventing DWI". Unfortunately, these top cops would still need to get their overtime somewhere else.
knee jerk April 24, 2014 at 08:43 am
@ Bryan: PS: Remember, with sick, holiday and vacation days these cops only work about 200 days aRead More year and run landscape, painting and home improvement businesses on the off days. They have to coup sometime. That 188 DWI arrest figure isn't as small as it appears.
Archie Bunker April 24, 2014 at 09:25 am
I guess this is a start although DWI's will continue because the penalties are not stiff enough toRead More deter people from doing this simple because they feel that they will chance it and get away with it.

Michael - the "progeny" vs. "prodigy" was an example that I was using for theRead More whole board here (or any other board). No, your post was fine and obviously I didn't misunderstand you. I was aiming that more at a lot of folks whom I truly can't understand. You just happened to be lucky enough to misuse a word and then accuse people of not comprehending what they're reading. As far as labelling me/us as woman-haters, again that was aimed at a few other people. And actually, if I am a troll, I just troll for the opportunity to rip on people for using sweeping generalities.

Would it really matter who wins the election? The system is broke. It take millions upon millions ofRead More $$$ to wage a presidential election these day of which the candidate is completely beholden to whichever corp or uber-wealthy donor who contributes to the candidate's campaign. Hillary is truly nothing more than an opportunist, just take a look at her track record But aren't they all? Rand and Ron Paul are as much a part of the system as the next - neither would have a snowballs chance in getting elected without tons of $$$ flowing into them. And these campaigns are nothing more than expensive popularity contests.

As someone once pointed out..."there are more people in the wagon than people pulling theRead More wagon in America. A savvy politician will no doubt pull out all of the stops to gain the votes. It's time to hold these social rejects we call "professional politicians" (BOTH SIDES) to the standards we expect from good government. Personally, I don't think she can handle the job of President NOT because she's a woman or Bill's wife. Hmmm . . . I keep hearing paranoia from left and right, but how are we to truly evaluate theRead More education we are paying for? Like so many issues that confront us today, there is no light; only heat. No method will be perfect. And, no disrespect intended, but I'm not sure parents are best situated to evaluate the efficacy of their children's education. After all, most were products of the very system we so desperately need to improve. We need SOME objective measure. Any ideas?

Everyday Mathematics is just one of the programs that makes a heck of a lot of $ off of the millions of textbooks sold to schools that teach to the 'Core.' The Common Core isn't just restricting for teachers & students, it's lining people's pockets.
Jennifer April 24, 2014 at 08:53 am
So Cow Dung, Gary has said it all in a much more straight-forward way. Everything he says is true,Read More and the information can be found, and checked, in MANY places. Just NOT on the Common Core website.
Jennifer April 24, 2014 at 09:00 am
Why do I have a problem with the Gates foundation? I think I said it before. They funded theRead More organizations that wrote the standards. They funded the organizations that reviewed the standards. They fuinded every group that supposedly had "input" into the development of the standards. There is NO record of what the "input" consisted of, or if any of it was implemented. All we really have on record is the Content advisor for Mathematics, Jim Milgrim, prof. at Stanford, explaining why he refused to endorse the math standard. We have the English Language content advisor, Sandra Slotsky, explaining why she, likewise, could not sign off on the standards. And she explains that she has sat on many such committees before, in her role in developing Massachussetts very well-respected standards, and she said that this is the first time she was required to sign a non-disclosure. She said such committees are usually subject to "Sunshine" laws. These are specific people, highly qualified people, giving specific and detailed testimony. But you would rather keep pointing to the CC website vaguely referring to "how educators were involved".
Jennifer April 24, 2014 at 09:39 am
I looked at the Wisconsin link you provided, and it gave a list of teachers on an ELA standardsRead More leadership team. This was out of context, and undated, so I dont really have an indication that it had anything to do with reviewing the CC standards, but assuming you just didn't copy enough pages into the link.....thay could list every teacher in America, by name, school, and department. If there are no records of what, if any recommendations were made, leading to what if any changes to the standards, I dont really see what that would prove. And since, as I have said, teachers and administrators at the local level are presumably under a gag order - if their states have signed agreements similar to NY - I don't know how we can be expected to trust anything about the CC. As I have said, I have several friends from college and HS who have been teaching for 25 + yrs, and my sister-in-law is a Vice Principal at a highly-ranked school in a highly-ranked state - and they all, across the board, HATE the program and what it does to children. And you can read the standards, but you do not have access to the agreements the states have signed, and do not know what other , untried methods of teaching will be mandatory under the Core.
