St. Joseph's College held a ceremony Friday afternoon, formally opening its new sports complex.
The sun was shining brightly and the temperatures made it a beautiful spring day - it was the perfect backdrop for the official grand opening of St. Joseph's College's new athletic complex. The complex, which was said in 2010 to cost $14 million, is located on a 24.8-acre property purchased in 2008 on Sunrise Highway's South Service Road, near Hospital Road. The green grass of the new athletic complex - which houses a new lacrosse/soccer stadium as well as a baseball and softball field and tennis courts - was unveiled in front of a group of local politicians and community members who made it possible. “I wanted to say a lot of thank yous,” Sister Elizabeth A. Hill said as she addressed the crowd. “There are so many people who have …

West Islip is the top seed for boys; Ward Melville is No. 1 girls team.
Lacrosse is a Long Island state of mind, and nothing showcased that more than the state playoffs a year ago. Three Long Island boys squads played in state title games, which ended with Farmingdale hoisting its first Class A plaque. It could have easily been West Islip instead. The teams played a thrilling Long Island championship game decided in overtime. West Islip, after all, has worn four of the last six state crowns. Perennial girls lacrosse power Northport finally broke through and won its first state Class A championship. In fact, Long Island girls teams have won nine of 10 possible state class titles (A, B, C) since 2009. But the first step is winning Suffolk, which begins with boys and girls lacrosse playoff games this week. The …

Farmingdale State senior, PMHS alumni Billy Garofalo hasn't played baseball since 2009 and is still the school's all-time saves leader.
Billy Garofalo, a 2006 alumni of Patchogue-Medford High School, wears his Farmingdale State Rams jacket with pride. But you won’t see him on the field Friday when the baseball team faces Keane in the first round of the NCAA Division III tournament. One the best baseball players in program history, Garofalo’s athletic career was cut short by injury. Garofalo has moved on, and is currently pursuing a Technical Writing degree at Farmingdale State. Garofalo went from All-Suffolk honors as a high school catcher to quickly securing the Rams' closer job, which he dominated in each of his three seasons. Garofalo achieved All-Conference honors as a freshman in 2007, All-Region honors (2008), and pitched in the 2009 NCAA Division III World Series. …

A "five-foot" high Lacrosse player takes on the hard hits of the sport.
Patchogue-Medford Raiders' freshman varsity lacrosse player Kyle Arcuri was recently featured in a video produced by MSG Varsity for being an attackman that is not of the usual height standards of most lacrosse players. "I'm probably about 4'11, 5 foot," Arcuri said. The report also said that he plays the hard-hitting sport weighing in at 90 pounds. Despite this, Arcuri told MSG Varsity that he is able to use his size to his advantage on the field. "I sneak around people a lot...it's what I do," Arcuri said. "He looks small but he's just a great player, he has the skill to do everything," said Matt Warnken, a Senior goalie on the team. Steve Mallot, head coach of the team, said that Arcuri was originally placed on the junior varsity team …
