Raking Patchogue Leaves For Typhoon Relief

Club raises $920 raking 16 yards worth of leaves.

The American Red Cross Club at St. Joseph's College's Long Island campus in Patchogue cleared leaves from homes in Patchogue and Medford over the weekend in order to support typhoon relief for the Philippines.

The club went to 16 homes working 9 a.m.-dusk, raising $920 that will be going to the American Red Cross for typhoon relief aid, Cortney Crespo, the club's president told Patch. A minimum donation of $25 per yard was requested, and Crespo said that some of the homes further donated pizza for the working club members.

In addition to raking leaves, the club is also selling sign-able paper crosses for $2 at the college to raise additional funds for the relief. Residents can also donate in-person by visiting the club on Sunday at the school's cafeteria from 2 p.m.-4 p.m. while they bake pies for a local soup kitchen for Thanksgiving. The campus is at 155 W. Roe Boulevard in Patchogue.

The organization is also doing a Holiday Mail for Heroes event through Wednesday, where they are supplying art supplies and paper to students in the cafeteria to create holiday cards for veterans and soldiers for free.

Disclosure: This editor does not enjoy raking leaves, and signed up for this club to do them as part of the fundraiser. They are in the photo of this post, and they did a great job.
