Community Steps Up to Help Guardsman Rebuild After Fire

Swan Lake Park Civic Association, residents help out neighbor who is serving in Africa.

The Swan Lake community is fundraising to help out resident Eric Carver, an Air National Guardsman serving in Africa, whose home was damaged by vandals and destroyed by a fire shortly after Christmas.

Carver, who is serving in Africa with the 106th Rescue Wing, is the president of the Swan Lake Civic group.

The community is rallying to help Carver and held a recent bake sale which raised over $10,000, and is also selling wrist bracelets, an idea prompted by a Medford Elementary Student, to help raise funds to repair the house.

“The community outpouring for this man, a neighbor who is overseas serving his country, was just overwhelming. I was glad to be able to be there to show my support," said Assemblyman Edward Hennessey, who attended the fundraiser.

"It has been famously said that all that is necessary for the triumph of evil is for good men to do nothing. That is not what happened here. It is very clear that this is a special community of very good people. They have already triumphed."
