Medford Bus Corporation May Lay Off 77 Workers

Potential contract loss with the Suffolk County Pre-K Program, cited as reason for layoffs.

Acme Bus Corporation may be laying off some 77 employees, who work out of the company's Medford location come June 30, according to the New York State Department of Labor's WARN list.

On the WARN list, the company stated that the business will be forced to close if a contract with the Suffolk County pre-k program for student bussing is not renewed.

The universal pre-k program is offered to students for free in several school districts across Suffolk County through a New York State grant.

The company further stated that another of its locations in Westhampton will also be affected, which could lead to a possible layoff of another 73 employees, also on June 30.

Acme Bus Corporation's director of human resources was not immediately available for comment.

The Medford location is at 30 West Yaphank Road.
