Racking Up Strikes at Bowl Long Island

Long Established Bowling Alley A Local Hotspot

Strikes, spares, splits, and gutters are all a part of the game of bowling; a sport played by many the world over and especially so in Patchogue. Having undergone a $1 million renovation in 2008, Bowl Long Island at Patchogue has become a family friendly staple and a local community center.

Today, brightly colored walls encircle the 40 lanes, equipped with the latest in scoring machinery, a bar, snack counter, and extensive pro shop. Yet it wasn't always this way.

"Starting out, I had visited the former owners George and Jackie and told them that when they were ready to sell, I'd buy it," said Chris Keller, who now owns the establishment with longtime friend Rob Eggert.

While it seemed like a simple enough transaction, it didn't work out that way. "I wasn't contacted," Keller said, "but I heard that they were closing." Keller persisted and once again proposed buying the alley.

Keller and Eggert took over in June 2008. "The center was still popular when we bought it," he said, "but it needed renovations and we were willing to put the time and money in."

Knowing that the renovations would bring the public back in, Keller and Eggert worked to let bowlers know that they were not shutting down, simply coming back better than eve. The monstrous renovation was completed in just 52 days, and Bowl Long Island opened for business in the summer of 2008.

"We still tweak little things.  This year we're redoing the parking lot, the roof and the bathroom," said Keller.

According to Keller, the business constantly continues to grow.

The history of the alley is a real asset to Bowl Long Island. "We meet people everyday who met their spouses here, who bowled here as kids," Keller said.

To battle the economic doldrums, Keller and Eggert have created a variety of money-saving events and leagues. One summer savings event allows kids to bowl free at Bowl Long Island all summer long. Weekly, a coupon for two free games is e-mailed out to be used anytime that week. Parents can also buy at family plan, starting at $24.95, covering two free games for up to four more people.

On Aug. 23, Bowl Long Island will host "Bowl with the L.I. Ducks," where fans of any age will get the chance to meet and bowl with their favorite Long Island Ducks players. This event costs a $20 for kids 18 years old and younger and $25 for adults.

"It's a real downtown Patchogue local center," Keller said.
