Visions For Vacancies: Plaza Theatre

In this series, readers can discuss what they would like to see spring up from vacant locations in Patchogue and Medford.

In “Visions for Vacancies,” Patchogue Patch will feature vacant storefronts and seek input from readers as to the type of business they would like to see fill the empty location.

The Plaza Theatre in East Patchogue was in September after standing vacant since the 1980s.

Although Brookhaven Town was able to take  of the theatre in March from its former owner, East Main Realty Corp, a Brookhaven Town spokesman said that the finalization of that proceeding is still ongoing.

While that clears up, the location of the former Plaza Theatre is now fenced off, and nothing but a few bricks and rubble remain in the space until a future building, business or other development is able to be planned.

What would you want to see come to this location? Tell us in the comments section below.

I am more concerned about the demolition of the land across the street, which was a nice vernacular brick building with handsome metal windows. Why was it torn down, and what is going to be built in its stead?

Why don't we use vacant spaces to grow some cooperative community gardens? Times are difficult and many of us don't have the economic resources to buy the fresh veggies, fruit, etc. that we'd like. In exchange for their time and effort working to grow and maintain crops and other plants, people would receive their share of whatever is grown in these spaces. It would also be a wonderful opportunity to get our kids physically involved in a community project from which they'd benefit in innumerable ways.

A grocery store would be a plus for this area.
