The Stories We Tell (Documentary Film, 2012)

The Stories We Tell (2012)

Documentary, PG-13m, 108 minutes Director: Sarah Polley *Writer, Director, Actress, and Academy Award Nominee (for Away from Her, 2006)

Writer, Director, and Actress, Sarah Polley explores the events leading up to the discovery of the identity of her biological father. Tender, complicated, and thought provoking, this film explores so many themes: the relationship between fathers and daughters; husbands and wives; siblings; a realistic look at marriage and infidelity; and, the differences between the reality of what we experience and the sentimentality of what we remember.  Polley and her family openly discuss how the choices of one family member at one point in time can affect others for generations to come.  I really connected to this film and whole heartedly recommend it. I’d love to get feedback from our patrons if they’ve seen it. I also highly recommend Polley’s 2006 film ‘Away from Her’, about a long-married couple faced with the reality of one's fading memory in the form of Alzheimer's. “A beautiful story about enduring love and grace amidst life's complexities.” Both films are available in the media collection @ Patchogue Medford Library!

[Sarah Polley on Stories We Tell (2012)] “I was exploring the themes of infidelity and long-term relationships in both my previous features and all of my short films. And now that I've made a movie about where the interest came from, subconsciously, I wonder if I now have to make fundamentally different films. Having thrown the form up in the air to see where it landed - playing with structure in very different ways than I had before - it's going to be hard to make a straightforward film again.”
