A scaffolding collapse in West Babylon sent a Medford man to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries Thursday morning.

According to the Suffolk County Police Department, Alberto Perez, 33, of Medford, was erecting scaffolding at about 8:24 a.m. for A-Plus Masonry at the location of Strahl & Pitsch Waxes at 230 Great Neck Road in West Babylon when a board he was standing on flipped.  Perez fell approximately 25 feet from the scaffolding to the ground.

Perez was airlifted to Stony Brook University Medical Center for broken bones and bruises. The injures were considered non-life-threatening.

Many people are unaware of life in the culture of the construction worker. Workers on government projects and union jobs may have strict safety rules but in the small businesses that dominate Long Island, and particularly residential construction, safety is completely absent. The workers themselves are competing against each other for their jobs and cannot afford to lose one minute of productivity for safey. In addition none of them are given any safety training at all, ever. I was 54 years old before I ever went to my first safety meeting. It was my first time working for a large company. At the meeting the whole subject was derided by the team leader as nonsense we had to go through to appease some higher authority. Nobody cares about construction workers, all they care about is their bottom lines.
