Robbery took place at Bellport Deli & Grocery Saturday, police said.

A man armed with a knife robbed the Bellport Deli & Grocery store Saturday around 5 p.m., Suffolk County Police said.

Police say that a man entered the 1769 Montauk Highway in Bellport location, threatened a female clerk and demanded food. The suspect them cut himself in front of the clerk and stole several items from the counter.

Police say officers Jeremy Fanning, Dennis Stewart, Michael Campbell and Robert Landgrover responded and confronted the suspected in the parking lot when he was attempting to flee in a vehicle.

Police say the suspect brandished a knife and threatened to hurt himself before the officers restrained him using tazers. The suspect was disarmed and taken into custody.

Police say the suspect, Joseph Pittman, 34 of Central Islip, was taken to Brookhaven Memorial Hospital Medical Center in East Patchogue where he was treated and released for minor injuries.

Pittman was charged with robbery in the first degree, resisting arrest, criminal possession of a controlled substance in the seventh degree and tampering with physical evidence. Pittman was held overnight Saturday at the Fifth precinct and had an arraignment scheduled at First District Court in Central Islip on March 24. Pittman plead not guilty at the arraignment.
