Police: Group of Men Attempt to Break Into Occupied N. Bellport Home, Kill Dog

Pit bull killed after she raced out of home Thursday afternoon, police say.

A group of men who attempted to force their way into an occupied North Bellport home Thursday afternoon shot and killed a dog who ran out of the home, police said.

According to police, four or five men attempted to enter a residence, which was occupied by four adults at the time, on Montauk Highway in the vicinity of Doane Avenue at about 3:10 p.m.

Some of the residents attempted to push the door back but the suspects sprayed them with a chemical substance, police said. As the residents were shutting the door, a family dog raced out of the door, police said.

One of the suspects, who all had their faces partially covered, shot the dog with a small caliber handgun and all of the men fled the scene with no proceeds from the attempted burglary, police said. The dog, an 11-year-old three-legged female pit bull named Sarah died from her wound, police said.
