Police: Stay Off Village Streets, Homeowners Can Return (Update)

Police and fire officials are working on clearing roadways, expecting high tide to worsen conditions.

Police and fire officials are asking Patchogue residents to please stay off Village streets and to not tamper with traffic blocks, especially on roads south of Main Street.

Local authorities are working to clear the areas, and they report that people have been impeding their abilities.

Patchogue Village mayor Paul Pontieri said that the Village has been working all day to clean up from Hurricane Irene.

“The big thing is to stay away from the south end of town. We have power lines down, we have water, it’s a dangerous situation,” Pontieri said.

Flooding, which has become a , has reached as far as South Ocean Avenue and Harrison Street.

Pontieri said that water is receding and homeowners who evacuated are being allowed back to their homes to assess damages.

Officials say that high tide has caused the current flood, and that they expect another high tide at 11 p.m. to increase flooding to the area.

Police have placed road blocks on South Ocean Avenue, but report that residents are moving the barricades.
