Cuomo: New Yorkers Can Vote at Any Polling Place

Governor signs executive order allowing residents displaced by Hurricane Sandy to vote at any poll site on Election Day.

Gov. Andrew Cuomo has signed an executive order allowing voters who can't make it to their normal polling place on Tuesday to cast ballots at any polling site in the state.

Voters who visit alternate polling sites will cast an affidavit ballot affirming that they are registered to vote in one of New York's federally declared disaster counties – Nassau, Suffolk, Rockland, Westchester – or New York City, Cuomo said in a release.

Voters, however, should attempt to cast ballots at their regular polling place, the governor said.

"If they cannot reach their polling site or their site is shutdown, only then should they vote at an alternative site," the release states.

Those who vote at alternate sites will be able to vote in the presidential and U.S. Senate contests "and for any other candidate and ballot initiative that appears on the official ballot where the voter is registered."

That means people who vote at alternate sites may not be able to cast ballots for all of the candidates running in their home district. A Suffolk County resident, for example, who votes in New York City will not be able to vote in State Senate or Assembly races.

Cuomo said the goal of the executive order was to give as many people as possible the chance to vote.

“Hurricane Sandy has already disrupted the lives of countless New Yorkers, but we will not let it disrupt anyone seeking to exercise the most fundamental of democratic rights: the right to vote,” he said. “Even in times of great tragedy and suffering, New Yorkers understand that we must continue to do all that we can to maintain the integrity of our system. That is why the State is making every effort to ensure that voters who are displaced from their homes because of the storm will still be able to make their voices heard on Election Day.”

Willard was a meek social misfit with a strange affinity for rats. He lived in a large mansion, with only his cranky and decrepit mother for company.

the founding members who originally set up the voting system didn't think the average person was smart or informed enough to make such important decisions. They have no idea how right they still are

Cringing at the possibility that almost half of the country still supports Barry, we could wake up tomorrow to another 4 years of disaster. The producers and the takers, taker almost have it.

LuLuu's getting out of the rubber room around 4:00 today to vote. Her meds should kick in by then...

4 more years of welfare and food stamps then vote Obama. 4 years of job growth and production then vote Romney/Ryan. It's simple.

Republican's work? Isn't that a contradiction of terms? Sure they go to jobs, but how much work do they actually do?
Aaron Clow November 06, 2012 at 06:33 PM
The Electoral College was established to prevent the "tyranny of the majority." For the right-wingers that believe in the anti-christ, you better hope the electoral college is still around. When the popular vote is 85% in favor of him for president, you'll be glad the state's electors will be able to counteract that. :)
John Gruber November 06, 2012 at 06:34 PM
Nyack, we shouldn't "hope" and "try" to make the president FAIL, then we all suffer. The fact is we vote for who we think will do the best job but that doesn't mean we should try to make the other person fail. If the person you don't vote for is elected, you still have to hope he can do the best job he can, nothing good comes from hoping the leader of our country fails
John Gruber November 06, 2012 at 06:35 PM
I think by "work" they mean "working" to set women's rights back 5 decades by dictating what they can't or can't do to themselves
Aaron Clow November 06, 2012 at 06:37 PM
Don't forget -- the working class now have to work two or three jobs to make ends meet. They tend to vote Democrat. And as for your "outsourcer in chief" article, it contradicts itself - "“75 years ago, General Motors came to our country with a dream to fulfill: turning Mexico into a prosperous nation for the benefit of millions of families. Today, after 75 years into the adventure, we have achieved goals that seemed unattainable, thanks to the efforts and dedication of Mexican talent." Now, I know you want to blame Obama for everything, but outsourcing jobs 75 years ago is not his fault. The article is extremely misleading about China as well. For instance, Buicks are a high-end luxury nameplate in China. Due to government regulations, there are advantages to building them there, so GM is EXPANDING and not OUTSOURCING by building a plant there. I suppose you also believe Romney's claim that "one of the great manufacturers in this state Jeep — now owned by the Italians — is thinking of moving all production to China." Bottom line, don't believe everything you read on the internets, Smitty.

Nyack Resident, With all due respect, Obama simply extended almost all of the "Bush" agenda. Romney will win, and he will simply extend the "Bush" agenda too. As if any of these guys can acutally come up with and implement their own agendas. What are we children? I will repeat the obvious, because if anyone had it right at the end of his days, it was Eisenhower: the president is the puppet salesman of the industrial/miltary complex. The prez is the smooth talking actor that sells the agenda of the rich and corporations and death mongers who are determined to eliminate the so-called middle class and plunge most of the citizens of the country into such economic slavery that we will be completely,,,what?...I shudder to think. We get sicker, crazier, meaner, with each new generation. This is indeed no country for old men...and the young?...they are just cannibalizing each other and then texting about it with pride.

GIVE THE PEOPLE WHAT THEY WANT! Tax cuts for the top 5%! Tax cuts on investment income! Unlimited spending on political campaigns by corporations! BECAUSE CORPORATIONS ARE PEOPLE! Make enemies of CHINA and RUSSIA and IRAN! I WANT TO KEEP MY TAX MONEY so I can BUY MORE BMW's instead of helping to EDUCATE our students and pave our roads and fix our bridges! LET THE MIDDLE CLASS bear the biggest tax burden! Who cares if they lose their houses? Who cares if they have to work at two or three jobs to make ends meet! That way they won't have time to complain about ROMNEY WINNING THE WHITE HOUSE and the GOP CONTROLLING EVERYTHING! POWER to the CORPORATIONS!

I live in Forest Hills and I just wanted to warn any residents who live there know... when looking for the place to vote, the school at 2 Russell Place, I was walking on the wrong street for over 1/2 an hour trying to find it because I haven't voted there in 4 years so I forgot where it was. But my point is, there are no signs anywhere to help people find the place! I also saw 4 other people walking on the wrong street looking for it also. I asked people who all gave me the wrong directions. Finally I was walking home because I was going to give up and not vote, but I bumped into a friend going to vote and they went to go vote with me. IF YOU WANT PEOPLE TO VOTE AT THIS LOCATION, THERE SHOULD BE SIGNS HELPING PEOPLE FIND IT!
kristen November 06, 2012 at 08:03 PM
So the people who have no polling places to go to b/c they were wiped out are just not supposed to, or even allowed to vote today? How ignorant of you to say that....did YOU get out and vote?? At least he is doing something for those people who may have nothing, but still want to go and be heard. I applaude that he is trying to come up with some sort of solution--I think it still will be a mess and we won't know who is president for weeks b/c there will be screwups with the system, but still, at least give these people a chance to get out there and vote!!
kristen November 06, 2012 at 08:06 PM
Why not just set up voting locations at the gas stations? That is where most of the population around here has been sitting for the past 5 days or so....
Keleas November 06, 2012 at 08:13 PM
why are you not considered displaced? If the storm and aftermath have forced you for some reason to leave your home and the area of your polling place, then you are displaced.
Parksloper November 06, 2012 at 09:10 PM
Gas stations and welfare offices. Courtesy of Obama and his minions who had control for a year plus during much of the first 2 years they had a 60-seat super majority in the Senate and a large majority in the House. What did that gets us? Failure... Obamacare, Clash for Clunkers, Dodd-Frank and the massive Stimulus.
Parksloper November 06, 2012 at 09:12 PM
"Just like the republicans did with Obama.' He did that all by himself within the first 2 years. The rest he's been golfing and campaigning while his wife takes million dollar vacations. Good riddance.
Frank T November 06, 2012 at 09:49 PM
Clueless Cuomo has no idea why we have gas shortages but has no problem blaming LIPA every day while he is unable to coordinate with the feds and other agencies to get needed gas shipments to LI. Just do your job Mr. Cuomo and leave the blame game until after the cleanup. It serves no purpose other than making it appear that you are doing something.

John Gruber, your bias is showing. Don't call anyone else ignorant until you look in the mirror.
