Traffic Lights Coming to Medford's Southaven Avenue

The five stop sign locations on Southaven Avenue have been on high accident lists for multiple years in a row, says Town Supervisor.

A series of new traffic lights are being added along Southaven Avenue in Medford.

Brookhaven Town Supervisor Ed Romaine told Patch that multiple studies of the Avenue started 10 years ago with repeat resident requests to do something about drivers that were not stopping.

"The five existing all way stops and the two traffic signals were not handling the existing traffic volume safely," Romaine said. "As a result the town had the five stop sign locations on high accident lists for multiple years in a row."

The intersections receiving the lights include those at Sipp Avenue, Maple Avenue, Whitepine Way, Tremont Avenue and Pennsylvania Avenue.

Romaine said all of the locations met the federal guidelines for traffic signals, and the installation of the lights is happening with a 100 percent grant.

Brookhaven Town Spokesperson Jack Krieger said that it will be around two more weeks for all signal work to be complete, then in following federal requirements the signals will go on flashing yellow/red for two weeks.
