Richard Garrett Named New Head Baseball Coach at St. Joseph’s-L.I.

Patchogue, N.Y. – The St. Joseph’s College (SJC) – Long Island athletic department is pleased to announce the appointment of Richard Garrett as the new head coach of the men’s baseball program.

Garrett takes over the Golden Eagles following a 17-year career at the helm of the highly successful program at St. Dominic High School in Oyster Bay.  Over the course of his tenure at St. Dominic, Garrett’s teams claimed four league titles, one Catholic league championship and became regarded as one of the top high school programs on Long Island.  Four St. Dominic players were selected in the Major League Baseball Amateur Draft in recent years.

“I feel truly blessed to have the opportunity to coach at St. Joseph’s College and to continue to build on a successful program,” said Garrett.  “As a program we will build a strong foundation for our players based on work ethic, leadership, responsibility and accountability.  This foundation will allow players to reach their full potential as Division III student-athletes.”

The Seaford resident has worked at St. Dominic in various administrative capacities since 1996.  He is also an accomplished educator having conducted classes at St. Dominic, Farmingdale State College and St. John’s University.  Garrett holds a master’s and bachelor’s degree from St. John’s and school district administrator (SDA) and school administrator supervisor (SAS) certificates from Hofstra University.

Coach Garrett takes over a Golden Eagle squad that finished last season with a 16-22 record and 9-7 mark in the Skyline Conference.  The team has not captured a Skyline Conference crown since the 2004 season but they have their sights set on ending that drought under Garrett’s tutelage.

The Golden Eagles are scheduled to open their season on February 28 with a home game vs. Ithaca College at the St. Joseph’s Outdoor Athletic Complex.
